Playing PG-Cricket with it's Basic Rules is quite enjoyable and we suggest you play with only those rules at the beginning. When you've become a good PG-Cricketer you might want to include in your game a few of the OPTIONAL RULES set out below.

BEWARE. SOME OF THESE RULES ARE NOT FOR THE WEAK AT HEART.

OPTIONAL RULES

Before the start of play, the team Captains must agree on any special conditions that would affect the match.

They should decide, for example, on the number of innings to be played, the number of players on each team, and the duration of play.

They should also consider which of the following rules will be enforced during the match.

RULE #1

The boundary of the field is at the 4 run ring.

You may continue to place fielders on the 5 run and 6 run rings but, a ball that falls safely on the 5 run ring will not roll to the 6 run ring even if that position is not occupied by a Fieldsman.

RULE #2

The Umpire shall not declare a Batsman out unless appealed to by the Captain of the fielding team.

This appeal must be called prior to the delivery of a new ball by the Bowler. At no time shall there be any bowling or batting practice.

RULE #3

The Batsman may appeal against the performance of the Bowler with the call "UMPIRE!"

This appeal must be called prior to the striking of the ball by the Batsman. The Umpire will answer the appeal by rolling his die and give his decision under the heading "BOWLING" on the game board.

If the Fieldsmen are positioned in such a way that the Batsman will be Caught Out if he strikes the ball, the Bowler may appeal to the Umpire with the call "HOW'S THAT!" If the Bowler appeals first, the Batsman is automatically out.

A Batsman that is given out will roll his die to determine where he will be placed on the board.

RULE #4

With the call "UMPIRE!" the Batsman may challenge the performance of a Fieldsman who is about to stop a rolling ball.

The Batsman may also appeal if he is about to be Caught Out. In this case, however, the Batsman must touch the position on the board where the ball would be caught and call "UMPIRE!"

The Umpire will answer either appeal by rolling his die and give his decision under the heading "FIELDING" on the game board.

If the Batsman is about to be Caught Out, the Bowler may appeal to the Umpire with the call "HOW'S THAT!" while touching the position on the board where the ball will be caught. If the Bowler appeals first, the Batsman is automatically OUT.

If the Batsman was given out other than Caught Out, the runs that were in progress are valid.

RULE #5

If in any case, the Batsman appeals to the Umpire unnecessarily, the Umpire will instruct that no runs be recorded for that stroke and that the Bowler delivers a new ball.

RULE #6

A match shall be lost by the team that wilfully or otherwise disrupts the position of the Fieldsmen and Score Markers on the board, making it impossible for play to continue.

On appeal by the Captain of the Batting team, the Umpire shall allow play to continue after declaring the current Batsman OUT (Wilful Obstruction) with a score of zero.

Children who are unable to add can enjoy the game by counting the number of Score Markers on the board instead of the runs they represent.

We will be glad to answer inquiries concerning these rules and would consider incorporating your suggestions into future versions of this game.
